Salma's dad and mum separated two years ago and Salma doesn't
see her dad any more. One day her mum tells Salma that she
has to go into hospital because she has something wrong with
her. Salma hears her mum talking with one of her own friends
and hears her mum say 'Cancer'.
From that day on, Salma stops all her activity. Her teachers
say, "She's only a shadow of herself. She never goes out at
playtime and says football stinks." Her mum notices she spends
all her time in her room with her computer and playing music.
Salma won't eat meals either, yet she's putting on weight.
Salma's mum has cancer of her skin. She has her treatment
and is completely better. Her treatment is with a kind of
X-ray, she sees a Radiographer.
Salma doesn't change back to her old self again though. It
turns out that Salma thought her mum was going to die –
and that she would be left with no mum or dad. She's angry
that her mum didn't explain to her what was wrong and about
her dad leaving. A team of people are able to help her get
better.
Salma is helped to express her anger with an Art
Therapist, she 'lets it out' and feels better for it.
She does some of the art with her mother. A Dietitian
helps her see how much better a healthy diet is and her weight
begins to return to normal.
