Podiatrists (also known as) chiropodists specialise in
keeping feet in a healthy condition. They play a particularly important
role in helping older people to stay mobile and, therefore, independent.
Podiatrists/chiropodists diagnose, evaluate and treat a wide range
of lower limb disorders. After starting their careers in general
clinics, they often go on to specialise in areas such as biomechanics
or in caring for high-risk patients. With further study, podiatrists
are increasingly becoming involved in foot surgery. Working as a
podiatrist involves working in a variety of environments with a
number of other health care professionals and many different groups
of patients who have a wide range of podiatric problems. The work
of a podiatrist falls in to four key categories: general clinics,
biomechanics, high-risk patient management and surgery.
